Chronic, Complex, and Rare Disease Advocacy and Healthcare Reform Awareness Day/Month is an annual event observed each September, dedicated to shining a spotlight on the lived experiences of patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals navigating the complexities of chronic, complex, and rare diseases. This observance is not only about raising awareness, but also about mobilizing efforts to drive meaningful healthcare reform that directly benefits these often-overlooked communities.
Throughout the entire month—and especially on the designated Awareness Day—we strive to foster a sense of unity and shared purpose among advocates, patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals. This time is dedicated to educating the broader public, engaging in impactful conversations, and promoting legislative and systemic changes that address the unique obstacles faced by those living with chronic, complex, and rare diseases.
By coming together with intention and urgency, we aim to amplify the voices of these communities and take tangible, coordinated actions that will lead to a more equitable and effective healthcare system for all.

BACKGROUND & NEED

You’ve probably heard of awareness days/months before and you’ve probably heard of and even participated in specific individual disease awareness days/months such as lupus awareness day/month, gastroparesis awareness day/month, lyme disease awareness day/month etc. or you’ve probably also heard of and participated in disease category days/months such as rare disease awareness day/month and chronic disease awareness month. These types of awareness days/months are the two main types of awareness days/months that we celebrate, recognize and look to unite and build upon in our Chronic, Complex & Rare Disease Advocacy & Healthcare Reform Awareness Day/Month.
While individual disease awareness days/months focus on specific conditions and category disease awareness days/months highlight broader disease categories, our advocacy day/month delves deeper into our shared experiences, seeks to magnify our collective voice and find ways to work together as one big community to break down the systemic barriers encountered by those with chronic, complex, and rare diseases.
Individual disease awareness days/months and disease category awareness days/months serve crucial roles in highlighting the unique needs and challenges of specific conditions and disease categories, our Chronic, Complex & Rare Disease Advocacy & Healthcare Reform Awareness Day/Month recognizes the immense power of collective advocacy and serves as a time to educate the public about the diverse range of conditions encompassed by chronic, complex, and rare diseases, while also advocating for healthcare reform in the form of legislative reforms, insurance policy changes, societal awareness, and medical education reform to improve outcomes for these patient populations collectively.
By uniting individuals, organizations, and stakeholders across various disease communities, we foster collaboration, amplify voices, and drive meaningful change within the healthcare system. While similar in its goal of raising awareness and advocating for improved healthcare, our day/month distinguishes itself by its focus on systemic change, collective advocacy, and the need for comprehensive healthcare reform to address the unique needs of individuals with chronic, complex, and rare diseases.

Examples include Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, and World AIDS Day.
Disease Category Awareness Days/Months
Focuses on raising awareness about a broader category of diseases or health conditions.
Aims to highlight the common challenges faced by individuals with diseases within the same category, such as access to treatment, research funding, and societal support.
Provides an opportunity for cross-learning and collaboration among different disease communities to amplify their voices and advocate for shared goals.
Examples include Chronic Disease Awareness Month, Rare Disease Day, and Autoimmune Disease Awareness Month.
Our Chronic, Complex & Rare Disease Advocacy & Healthcare Reform Awareness Day/Month
Focuses on advocating for systemic change within the healthcare system to benefit individuals with chronic, complex, and rare diseases collectively.
Aims to address the broader challenges faced by these patient populations, including access to care, support services, research funding, and healthcare policy reform.
Prioritizes legislative reforms, insurance policy changes, societal awareness, and medical education reform to improve outcomes and quality of life for individuals with chronic, complex, and rare diseases.

WHY IT MATTERS

Plain and simple – it matters because we need to create societal and legislative change for those living with, caring for and treating those with chronic, complex and rare diseases.
To do this, we believe that uniting our voices from all the various individual awareness days/months and disease category awareness days/months and put all our efforts into collectively taking a day/month to intentionally come together to share our personal and shared experiences and advocacy talents to work together to break down the systemic barriers encountered by those with chronic, complex, and rare diseases.
By doing so, we can create a healthcare system and society that is more suited to truly supporting the needs of those living with, caring for and treating those with chronic, complex and rare diseases.
