WHY WE MADE IT

We created the Road to Reform program because we understand the complexities and challenges of starting an advocacy journey. From our own experiences, we know that stepping into advocacy can be incredibly overwhelming—many people are eager to make a difference but feel unsure of where to start, what steps to take, or whether they have the necessary preparation to be effective. The vast amount of information and the perceived inaccessibility can often prevent passionate individuals from getting involved. That’s why we developed this program: to simplify and demystify the process.
By breaking down the advocacy journey into clear, manageable steps, and offering tailored guidance, we aim to make the path to becoming an advocate more accessible. Our structured approach helps you navigate through the myriad of resources on our site, ensuring that you understand each stage and how to effectively engage. Ultimately, we want to empower you with the tools, confidence, and support needed to overcome barriers and take meaningful action in your advocacy efforts.

HOW IT WORKS &
hOW iT iS oRGANIZED

The Road to Reform program is designed to guide you through every stage of advocacy, starting from the very basics and advancing to more complex advocacy efforts. Once you register, you’ll choose the course that best fits how you advocate in this space (ex. as a patient, caregiver, physician/healthcare worker etc.).
Each course is structured into distinct sections, beginning with an introduction and followed by four tiers we created to help you on your advocacy journey.
The first two tiers—Tier 1 and Tier 2—are part of the “Rise” section. These tiers focus on personal growth and community involvement, helping you rise up in your advocacy journey. Tier 1 emphasizes self-advocacy and education, providing you with foundational knowledge and skills to advocate effectively for yourself or your loved ones. Tier 2 builds on this by encouraging you to extend your advocacy efforts within your community, fostering awareness and support through social networks and local initiatives.
The “Rally” section encompasses Tier 3 and Tier 4, which delve into more advanced advocacy strategies. Tier 3 focuses on legislative advocacy, guiding you through the process of influencing policy and engaging with lawmakers to address issues related to chronic conditions and rare diseases. Tier 4 takes this further by preparing you for leadership roles, helping you spearhead systemic reforms and contribute to broader strategic initiatives.
Each lesson within these tiers will direct you to relevant pages on our site where you can read more, download resources, and take actionable steps. This structure ensures that you not only learn about advocacy but also effectively utilize our site’s resources to enhance your journey. By following this comprehensive roadmap, you’ll gain the confidence and knowledge needed to become an impactful advocate, meeting you where you are and guiding you to where you want to be.

THE ROAD TO REFORM ROADMAP

RISE

The “Rise” sections, comprising Tier 1 and Tier 2, focus on equipping and empowering individuals in their personal advocacy journey and community involvement.

RALLY

The “Rally” sections, including Tier 3 and Tier 4, concentrate on advancing your advocacy efforts to influence policy and systemic change.
TIER 1
Self-Advocacy and Education
This tier is all about giving you the resources and education you need to start advocating for yourself or your loved ones. It covers everything from building advocacy skills and understanding diagnoses to navigating the healthcare system. It’s the starting point, helping you focus on your needs and see just how important advocacy really is.

TIER 2
Community Advocacy and Awareness
In this tier, you are encouraged to share your experiences and advocate within your community. This means raising awareness through social media, personal networks, and conversations with healthcare providers. It’s all about empowering you to become an advocate, not just for yourself, but for others facing similar challenges.
TIER 3
Legislative Advocacy
Here, you’re guided to get involved in advocacy efforts that shape healthcare policies around chronic conditions and rare diseases. This could mean meeting with legislators, joining advocacy campaigns, or supporting initiatives that aim to improve healthcare access and affordability.
TIER 4

This tier is for those of you who are passionate about advocacy and ready to step into leadership roles within the organization.
